Variables in C tutorials

  • Variable are placeholder to store values. Also called as identifiers.

  • As value varies from time to time, it is called variable.

  • Variable names are name given to location in memory. Those memory location can contain integer, real or character data.

  • Every variable is identified by a unique name.

  • As C being, case sensitive, variable Amt is different that variable amt.

For example in program if we write,

int amt; // this command will open one variable called amt for storing integer value.

amt=50; // this command will store 50 into amt variable.

amt=amt+5; // after executing this command value of amt will increase by 5, it will become 55.

Variable naming rules.

  • Variables can be formed of upper and lower case alphabetic characters, digits and underscore character ( _ ).

  • The first character of a variable name must be alphabet.

  • Some compiler will restrict variable length up to 31 characters, while latest C compiler will allow variable up to 247 characters long.

  • C /C++ is case- sensitive language. Variable ADDRESS is different from address.

  • All reserved key words of C programming language cannot be used as variable name.

Examples for Valid Variable:

rate

amt

name1

int_perc

age

Examples for Invalid Variable Names:

1A invalid as 1st character is not alphabet character,

abc$ invalid as $ sign is not allowed in varible name,

int perc invalid as space is not allowed in a variable name.

char invalid as char is reserved word in C programming language.
