CSS BOX MODEL tutorials

  • CSS box model describes the rectangle boxes that are generated for element as explained below.

  • Each box has a content area for Text, Image and optional surrounding for Padding, Border and Margin area.

  • The following diagram describes how each of these area are related and used for margin, border and padding.

Explanation:

 

Content:- This is main content, where text and images are displayed. The content edge surrounds the rectangle given by the Width and Height of the box.

Padding: The padding edge surrounds the box padding. If the padding has 0 width, the padding edge is same as the content edge. Content is surrounded by Top, Right, Bottom and Left Padding.

Border The border edge surrounds the box border. If the Border has 0 width, the Border edge is same as the Padding edge. Padding is surrounded by Top, Right, Bottom and Left Border.

Margin The Margin edge surrounds the box margin. If the Margin has 0 width, the Margin edge is same as the Border edge. Border is surrounded by Top, Right, Bottom and Left Margin.

 

Lets do calculation of element for following.

 

width:300px;

height:200px;

padding:10px;

border:6px solid;

margin:4px;

 

Total Width will be

300 px Width

+ 20px for ( 10px Left and 10px Right Padding)

+ 12px for ( 6px Left & 6px Right Border)

+ 8px for ( 4px Left and 4px Right Margin )

= 340px Total Width of CSS Box model.

 

Total Height will be

200 px Height

+ 20px for ( 10px Top and 10px Bottom Padding)

+ 12px for ( 6px Top & 6px Bottom Border)

+ 8px for ( 4px Top and 4px Bottom Margin )

= 240px Total Height of CSS Box model.
