JavaScript Assignment Operators tutorials

  • Assignment operators are used to update the value of a variable. Some assignment operators are combined with other operators to perform a computation on the value contained variable and then update the variable with the new value.

  • The assignment operators supported by JavaScript are listed in the below table, for the example given that X=10 and Y=5.






Simple assignment operator, Assigns values from right side operands to left side operand

X=Y returns X=5

(where X=10 and Y=5 )



Add AND assignment operator: It adds right operand to the left operand and assign the result to left operand

X+=Y returns X=15


Since X+=Y is same as X=X+Y


Subtract AND assignment operator: It subtracts right operand from the left operand and assign the result to left operand

X-=Y returns X=5


Since X-=Y is same as X=X-Y


Multiply AND assignment operator: It multiplies right operand with the left operand and assign the result to left operand

X*=Y returns X=50


Since X*=Y is same as X=X*Y


Divide AND assignment operator: It divides left operand with the right operand and assign the result to left operand

X/=Y returns X=2


Since X/=Y is same as X=X/Y


Modulus AND assignment operator: It takes modulus using two operands and assign the result to left operand

X%=Y returns X=0


Since X%=Y is same as X=X%Y

For the Example a = 33, b = 10, c = 33

Value of a + = b = 43

Value of c - = b) = 23

Value of a = (a = b) = 10

Value of a = (c += b) = 35


  • From the above example we have declare three variables a, b, and c. where a=33, b=10 and c=25. In the first document.write the value of a=(a=b), The value of b is assigned to a ie, it will write the output as a=10.

  • Similarly we can see In the second document.write the value of a=(c+=b).ie a= c+b. , it will write the output as a=35.
