JavaScript function with a Return Value tutorials

  • Sometimes you want your function to return a value back to where the call was made.

  • This is possible by using the return statement.

  • When using the return statement, the function will stop executing, and return the specified value.



function function_name()


var x= value;

Return x;


The function above will return the value of x.


Example: The following example, We will calculate square in a JavaScript function and return the result.
Output: 9 Square = 81


Note: Once the return statement is called in a function it will break, i.e no further statements below it will be executed.


Example: Example JavaScript function to calculate and return factorial of any positive number.
Output: 5 Factorial equal to 120


  • From the above example we have create a function"factorial" . The function factorial calculate the factorial of any positive number. For the example if we enter the no 5, then the factorial of 5 will be 120.


Example: the following example provides a JavaScript function definition.


  • From the above example, the script in the document head defines the function, displayTaggedText(), that takes two parameters, tag and text.

  • The actual values for tag and text are passed to the function via these parameters when the function is invoked. The function consists of three statements.

  • The first statement writes the left angle bracket, followed by the value of the tag parameter plus a right angle bracket to the current document.

  • The second write statement writes the value of the text variable to the current document.

  • The third statement writes the string</, followed by the value of the tag variable followed by the right angle bracket, to the current document.

  • The displayTaggedText() function does not return a value
