JavaScript Variables tutorials

  • Like other programming languages, JavaScript variables are a container that contains a value - a value that can be changed as required.

  • Rules for defining variable

    1. JavaScript variable names are case sensitive. For example, Name and name are two different variables.

    2. Variable name must begin with Alphabet i.e. (A to Z or a to z).

    3. Variable name can also begin with _ (underscore) and $ (dollor – but we won't use it).

    4. Rest of the characters can be uppercase letter (A-Z), lower case letter (a to z), Digit from (0 to 9) & underscore character (_).

Note: The dollar sign "$" character is reserved for machine-generated code and should not be used in the script. Also it doesn’t works on browsers that are not fully compatible with ECMAScript: (is the scripting language, widely used for client-side scripting on the web).

 

Syntax: the syntax for declaring the variables are:

var <variable name> = value

 

Examples for Valid Variable Names:

Number_Items

Part1

_pagecount

Carname

 

Examples for invalid Variable Names:

98Car // cannot begin with a number

Car&Motor // the ampersand (&) character is not a valid character for variable names.

Sal$ // Invalid as $ is not allowed in variable name.

 

Example: Before you use a variable in a JavaScript program, you must declare it. Variables are declared with the var keyword as follows:

You can Also declare multiple variables with the same var keyword as follows:

<script type="text/javascript">

var money, name ;

</script>

  • We made two variables in this example--one to hold the HTML for a line break and the other for a dynamic variable that had a total of three different values throughout the script.

  • To assign a value, to a variable, you use the equal sign (=), with the variable on the left and the value to be assigned on the right.

  • If you swap the order, your script will not work correctly! In English, the JavaScript "declarevar = 'Hello '" would be: declarevar equals 'Hello '.
