prompt ( "message text" , "default value") JavaScript function tutorials

  • The JavaScript prompt box prompts the user to input text. The 'prompt' box is created using JavaScript's built-in prompt() function.

  • When the JavaScript prompt() function is triggered, a small box will pop up and display a message to the user (supplied by you), a text field (for the user's input), an "OK" button, and a "Cancel" button.

  • If the user clicks "OK" the box returns the input value. If the user clicks "Cancel" the box returns null.

Syntax: General syntax of prompt box is as follows:

propmpt ("textmessage","default_value")

Example: The following example shows the use of JavaScript prompt function.

  • From the above example, we have declare the variables a, b, c, d, and e. where a takes the integer values from the user input. And variable b takes the decimal number from the user input.

  • after running the program a prompt box will display with message"Enter the value of a", after clicking the OK button a prompt box display with message "Enter the value with decimal for b" then press the OK button it will produce the output which is shown in the above potput, where variable c takes the string addition values, variable d takes the integer addition values, and variable e takes the decimal addition of the values.

  • values, variable d takes the integer addition values, and variable e takes the decimal addition of the values.

Example: The following example shows the use of JavaScript prompt function.

  • From the above example, the default value is stored with value "SAM Computer" and prompt box pops up with the message "Enter the Company Name with a default value as SAM Computer and two buttons (OK and Cancel).

  • When the user presses the OK button, the value SAM Computer is returned by prompt box, which is stored in the variable name.

  • If the user presses Cancel, then null value is returned by the prompt box.
