Creating a Database Connection tutorials

  • The first step to managing database objects using Oracle SQL Developer is to create a database connection. Perform the following steps:

  • Start SQL Developer.
This procedure varies by platform. In Windows, for example, choose Start > All Programs > Oracle - OraDb11g_home2 > Application Development > SQL Developer.

  • Now Oracle SQL Developer opens.

  • In the Connections navigator, right-click Connections and select New Connection.

  • The New / Select Database Connection dialog opens. Enter the connection details as follows and click Test.

    • Connection Name: demodatabase_conn

    • User Name: system

    • Password: <your_password> (You Entered During Installation) (Select the Save Password checkbox)

    • Hostname: localhost

    • SID: demodatabase <your_own_SID>

  • Check for the status of the connection on the left-bottom side (above the Help button). It should read Success. Click Connect. Then click Save.

  • The connection was saved and you see the newly created connection in the Connections list.

  • Now Expand demodatabase_conn(newly created connection name).

  • Note: When a connection is opened, a SQL Worksheet is opened automatically. The SQL Worksheet allows you to execute SQL against the connection you have opened.
