Difference between various software testing terms tutorials

Difference between Software Verification and Validation

Have we build the software right? (i.e. does it match the specification).

Have we build the right software? (i.e. is this what customer wants).

It is the process of evaluating a system or component to determine whether the product of given development phase satisfy the conditions imposed at the start of the phase.

It is the process of evaluating a system or component during or at the end of the development process to determine whether it satisfies specified requirements.

Verification takes place first and includes the checking for documentation, code etc.

Verification takes place first and includes the checking for documentation, code etc.

Usually done by software developers

Done by Testers.

Have static activities as it includes the reviews, walkthroughs, and inspections to verify that software is correct or not.

Have dynamic activities as it includes executing the software against the requirements.

Difference between Debugging and Testing

It is a process of identifying, locating bug/errors & defect in software and correcting it.

It is a process of identifying bug/error/defect in software without correcting it.

This activity is carried out by software development team.

This activity is carried out by software testing team.

Intention is to remove those bugs/errors or defects.

Intension is to find as many bug/error or defects.

This is performed at development phase and sometimes at later stage when defects are reported by clients.

This is done at testing phase.

Normally professional with knowledge of programming are involved.

Normally professional with quality assurance background are involved.

What is the difference between Error, Bug and Defect?

Error: It is the Deviation from actual and the expected value.

Bug: It is found in the development environment before the product is shipped to the respective customer.

Defect: It is found in the product itself after it is shipped to the respective customer.

A programmer makes an error (mistake), which results in defect (Fault, bug) in the software source code. If this defect is executed, in certain situation the system will produce wrong results, causing a failure.
