Designing Database tutorials

  • The purpose of a database is to store the day-to-day operational information required by organization. Any means of collecting and organizing data is a database.

  • Prior to computer age, information was primarily stored manually in BOOKS, LEDGER, FOLDERs and NOTES. After the invention of Computers the data are stored in computer in form of digital format.


Following are steps in designing database

1)      Planning and Analysis

2)      Conceptual / Logical designing

3)      Physical designing

4)      Implementation

  • The first phase of Planning and Analysis is an investigation phase. During this phase you are required to gather and analyze information required from organization and users. You need to involve users because they know their jobs and you have to agree to them.

  • The second phase of Conceptual/Logical designing is similar like drawing blueprint of building before constructing actual premise. There are different tools available for this

  • Physical designing is used by IT sectors and it is used by programmer and system analyst for developing computer software. This type of design include IT technical name i.e. column name, data type, width, decimal along with other information

  • Actual implementation will be used when one install those database in computer using particular DBMS or RDBMS software.

  • SQL Server data is stored in databases. The data in a database is organized into the logical components that are visible to users, while the database itself is physically implemented as two or more files on disk. When using a database, you work primarily with the logical components (such as tables, views, procedures, and users). The physical implementation of files is largely transparent. Typically, only the database administrator needs to work with the physical implementation.
