Starting SSMS tutorials

  • SSMS stands for SQL Server Management Studio.

  • SQL Server Management Studio is an integrated management, development and querying application with many features for exploring and working with your databases.

  • It is based on the Visual Studio Development shell and gives similar feel.

 

Starting SSMS

1)     Go to Start à All Programs à SQL Server subfolder à Click on SQL Server Management Studio. or

2)     We can also Start SSMS using command Prompt window by typing command “ssms.exe”. or

3)     Type “SSMS” in Search Program and files box and select it.

 

By default SSMS will display "Connect to Server" dialog box as follows.

 

 

Server name:

  • Using this box you can specify the server (or instance) name and your security credentials.

  • You can select Server name by clicking arrow button on right hand side, or you can type server name manually.

  • For default you don't need to specify instance, where as

  • In order to connect to Instance, you need to give server name as host\instance. For example cbt-sam\mumbai. In this name of the host name (Windows Server) is cbt-sam, and mumbai is name of instance.

  • For Microsoft Windows Azure, the server name is a four-part Fully qualified name in the form for example <host_name>.database.windows.net.

 

Authentication:

  • The Authentication is required to connect server.

  • You can have it to Windows Authentication or SQL Server Authentication mode.

  • When you configure it with Windows authentication, you will need to provide Windows User Account to log in to the SQL Server instance.

  • When you provide SQL Server Authentication mode, your username and password must be created by database administrator before you can logon.

  • For SQL Azure, it works only with SQL Server Authentication mechanism.
