AD replication tutorials

There are 2 type of site replication. 1) INTRASITE and 2) INTERSITE

INTRASITE REPLICATION

is site replication with in site. A site may have more than one DC. When any modification is made to one DC. The changes occurred to one DC will be notified to other DCs. When other DCs are ready it will poll replication and then update their information. Usually this replication is fast as it is within LAN that is connected using fast NIC cards.

INTERSITE REPLICATION

is site replication between multiple sites. As it is traveling at less then LAN speed, so one have to see that the information moves around WAN line is smaller as compare to LAN. When data which has to move over other server if it is more than 50 KB then it is COMPRESSED. Replication DC do not notify changes made to other DC. They will poll only at the schedule time, the default time is once every 15 min, max time limit is 10080 minutes,.

For INTERSITE replication it use KCC (Knowledge Consistency Checker) which optimize the replication process. The KCC automatically creates connections between DC and it use one of 2 protocol i.e. IP or SMTP

Force Replication

  • Assume that you are administrator for tatasteel.com and your company have office in Mumbai and Delhi. For Delhi.tatasteel.com you have created new users objects for user in mumbai.tatasteel.com. You have notified this to admin of Delhi and after an hour Delhi admin says that new users can not logon to domain. You want to make sure that new users can logon as soon as possible.

  • Here you need to force replication from mumbai.tatasteel.com to delhi.tatasteel.com. Because dehli.tatasteel.com is out-of-date, you need to apply force replication.

Start – Administrative Tools – Active Directory Sites and Services

Select “Sites” and choose “Delhi” (site whose data is out of date)

    Expand Server folder

Select NTDS settings on left side of panel

Right click on mumbai-delhi-site-link and click “Replicate now”

Replication Monitor [REPLMON.exe]

  • REPLMON can be installed from “Windows Server 2003” CD - Support Folder – select “SUPTOOLS.MSI”

  • Now Select Start – run – replmon.exe

  • Select – Searched the Directory for the server to Add” will automatically select server, then it will give list all sites, choose which one you want to monitor.

  • It will display schema partition, DNS partition and other detail.

  • You can see list of other domain where replication are done. It shows data and time on right side.

  • To force replication between two computer, right click on computer and choose “Synchronize with this Replication Partner”

  • You can click on Update Automatically feature button, that allows you to specify how often the replication reports should be refreshed.

Rename a Domain

  • Due to change in Location of Domain, Acquisition, Merger, Wrong spelling of domain or Business Restructure case you may need to rename Domain.

  • You can rename Domain only if

  • All Domain Controllers are running Windows 2003

  • The Domain Function level is Windows 2003

  • The Forest Level is also at Windows 2003

  • You must be a member of Domain Admins group

  • You can use RENDOM command to rename Domain.
