Windows Registry tutorials

>Windows Registry is collection of system configuration setting in a hierarchical datafile. It includes settings for OS, users, Programs, Hardware, Application and installed drivers. There are 5 main sub-tree in Registry editor.


HKEY_CLASS_ROOT – stores files OLE (Object Linking and Embedding data and files used to link programs.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER stores data about currently logged user that is taken from user profile

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – contain all H/w specific configuration data for the PC, OS, Application, Device driver and system startup data. This data is same for all users of the computer.

HKEY_USERS– contain default setting for users. The information for particular user is copied to HKEY_CURRENT_USER when user log on to the computer

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG– data about currently loaded hardware profile.

NOTE- DO NOT change or Edit registry. It may cause problems and you may not be able to boot/start computer OR you may get unexpected errors.
