Windows Server 2008 Activation tutorials

What is activation?

S/W installed on PCs are in non activated form. To use it thoroughly you need to Activate it from developer. Activation helps to verify that your copy of windows is genuine and that it has not been used on more computers than the Microsoft Software License terms allow. In this way activation helps to prevent software piracy.

You have 30/60 days after installing windows to activate it. You can do it online via Internet or via Telephone.

It gives grace period of 30 or 60 days. If this 30/60 days period expires before your activation, windows will stop working. You won’t be able to create new files or save changes to existing files.


What is Grace Period?

  • After you install Win Server 2008, it must be activated within 30/60 days of installation which is called Grace period.

  • While installing Windows Server 2008 clear the checkbox

  • Automatically Activate Windows when I’m online.

  • If you chose to Automatically Activate Windows when I’m online. Then windows will try to activate your copy of windows 3 days after you log on for the first time.


* How to know the exact grace period left to activate this product?

1) Start – Control Panel – System

2) Start – Run – Cmd -

slmgr.vbs -dli

This command will run Windows Script and will show you grace period in Mins.


* Can we extend grace period?

  • If you want to try with grace period and test further, you can increase the grace period Max by 2 time for 30/60 Days. By applying following command, Windows Grace period will get extended by 30 or 60 days. You will have to restart server after following cmd.

    Start – Run – Cmd

    Slmgr.vbs -rearm


* Do you need to Activate OS immediately?

  • Although the default option is for Activation to occur after computer connects to the internet. It might happen that you might not get your configuration precisely correct in the first time. It is a good idea to use part of 30/60 day Activation grace period to let the server settle.

  • If you drastically need to change hardware such as upgrading Processor or Motherboard, Changing processor would normally lead to a reactivation. Therefore remember, to wait and ensure that server does not require further hardware upgrade and then perform Activation.

  • Although product activation does not need to occur during the actual installation process, administrator who wants to automate the volume activation should consider using WDS [Windows Deployment Services]. Volume activation provides a simple centralized method that system administrator can use for activation of large number of deployed servers.

  • With Volume Licensing for products such as Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and Microsoft Office 2010, you must use a new type of product activation called Volume Activation (VA). To activate these operating systems with VA you can use following 2 methods
