Consideration for Upgrading v/s Migrating tutorials

What is Upgrading

  • When you perform upgrade option, your old operating system will make way for new operating system. When you upgrade to new Operating system, Windows 7 automatically detect and depending upon operating system it retain data from earlier computer.

Typically does not require reinstallation of applications.

Require reinstallation of applications.

Does not require additional Storage space, as migration of files is not required.

Require more storage space or devices, as you need to migrate old files.

Simple setup process.

Need some technical assistant for migrating files.

Time saving

Reinstallation of application will be time consuming job.

Retrain user settings, application settings and files without additional efforts.

You need to perform additional efforts to backup and then restore those files.

Recommended for SOHO segment

Recommended for large enterprise who need standardized environment.

Keep in mind that applications from previous Operating system may not work correctly on new Operating system.

Upgrade does not allow changing operating system edition, for example you cannot upgrade Windows 7 Startup edition to Windows 8 Enterprise edition.

Exploits such as virus, malware, spyware might get extended to upgraded operating system.

As you perform clean install and then migrate data, while installing applications only righteous applications will be installed.

Allows installing any edition of operating system that is supported by hardware.

After installing new Operating System, we can immediately install virus scanner, firewall and appropriate software to safeguard new operating system from virus, malware and so on.

Process of upgrading.

  • Evaluate: before you upgrade any computer you must evaluate whether your computer hardware meets the requirements to run Windows 7. You may download Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) and Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) to assess your organization’s readiness.

  • I would personally recommend you to download MAP – Microsoft Assessment and planning toolkit 8.0 from Microsoft site and give it a try. MAP performs discovery and inventory of computer and applications, hardware and software migration readiness assessments, software usage tracking and capacity planning for virtualization, public and private cloud migration. MAP performs a detail analysis of hardware for migration to Windows 7, Windows 8, Server 2008, Server 2012, SQL Server 2008 and 2012, Microsoft Office 2010, Office 365 and so on. After analysis it gives detailed report for each migration scenario.

  • Back Up: Before you upgrade any computer, it is wise to backup all important data.

  • Upgrade: Perform the upgrade, run the Windows 7 setup.exe from appropriate media.

  • Verify: After the completion of upgrade, verify all the applications, hardware devices function and data.

  • Update: perform Windows Update to download any critical fixes and drivers. This step will keep system protected against security threats.
