Public Addresses are assigned by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

Assigned and used internally. No need to take any permission from any organization.

IP address is routable on internet

IP address is not routable on internet

Must be unique

Private IP address are not unique, so anyone can use it.

When public addresses are assigned routes are programmed inter Router so that internet traffic to the route can reach their location.

As private IP address cannot be reached from public Internet. In order to use Internet while using private IP address, Technologies such as NAT (Network Address Translation) is used.

View and Configure IPv4 Address

  1. Press Windows Logo Start Key or Point to the bottom left corner of the taskbar and click Start to get Start Screen.

  2. Type ‘Control’ and then select Control Panel.

  3. In control Panel Click Network and Internet

  4. In Network and Internet panel, click View Network Status and Tasks.

  5. This will open Network and Sharing Center, from the right hand side click Local Area Connection or click on your LAN card name.

  6. This will open Local Area windows, Click on “Detail” Button. This will open new windows with all configuration detail of selected LAN card. You can verify IPc4 Address from there.

  7. Click Close button.

  8. To change IPv4 address, click on Properties button. It will open new windows.

  9. Scroll down and select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) and click Properties button again.

  10. It gives you two choices, Obtain an IP Address Automatically or Use the following IP Address.

  11. If you want to configure IPv4 address manually, click on Radio button ¤ Use the following IP address:

  12. Now enter IP Address for example 192.168.10.5

  13. Enter Subnet Mask as 255.255.255.0

  14. Enter Default Gateway as 192.168.10.1

  15. Similarly to configure DNS Server you may choose from Obtain DNS Server address automatically or use the Following DNS Server address.

  16. If you choose to enter DNS server manually then you need to provide Preferred DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server.

  17. Once Done Click OK to close configuration window.

 

To configure IPv4 Address using Command Prompt do as follow.

  1. Press Windows Logo Start Key or Point to the bottom left corner of the taskbar and click Start to get Start Screen.

  2. Type CMD and then select CMD, Right Click and then choose Run as an Administrator

  3. This will open Administrator: Command Prompt Window

  4. Type NETSH command as follows

  5. Netsh interface ipv4 set address name=”Local Area Connection’

  6. Source=static addr=192.168.10.5 mask=255.255.255.0

  7. Gateway=192.168.10.1
