IPv4 Address can be assigned by following types tutorials

1) Static IP Address (Assigned Manually)

2) Dynamic IP Address (with help of DHCP)

3) APIPA - Automatic Private IP Address

 

1) STATIC IP ADDRESS:-

  • Static IP are assigned to NIC card manually. When you manually assign an IP address, you must manually assign other TCP/IP address, subnet mask and default gateway. You are also required to configure DNS Server.

 

2) DYNAMIC IP ADDRESSES (with help of DHCP)

  • Dynamic IP addresses are automatically assigned to computers by DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server. When a DHCP dynamically assign an IP address, the server also assign subnet mask and default gateway.

  • In this case there exist a DHCP server or DHCP compatible Router exist. Both DHCP Server or Router is configured with DHCP scope (that is Starting and Ending IP Address Range) and Exclusions (IP address restricted from assigning).

 

3) APIPA - Automatic Private IP Address

  • APIPA are used when a computer is configured to get IP address for DHCP. However if DHCP server is unavailable for some reason, In this case APIPA will assign IP address in the range from 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254 with the subnet mask of 255.255.0.0.

 

Configure IPv4 Address Automatically using DHCP

  • Press Windows Logo Start Key or Point to the bottom left corner of the taskbar and click Start to get Start Screen.

  • Type ‘Control’ and then select Control Panel.

  • In control Panel Click Network and Internet

  • In Network and Internet panel , click View Network Status and Tasks.

  • This will open Network and Sharing Center, from the right hand side click Local Area Connection or click on your LAN card name.

  • This will open Local Area windows, click on Properties button. it will open new windows.

  • Scroll down and select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) and click Properties button again.

  • It gives you two choice, Obtain an IP Address Automatically or Use the following IP Address.

  • From two choice click ¤ Obtain an IP Address Automatically.

  • Similarly to configure DNS Server choose Radio button ¤ Obtain DNS Server address automatically.

  • Once Done Click OK to close configuration window.

  • To confirm that your NIC card has obtained IPv4 address from DHCP click go to command prompt and type IPCONFIG /ALL to verify.
